Edmonton winters are not gentle. By November, the temperature drops, daylight shrinks, and foot traffic slows down for most local businesses. The ones that keep their pipeline healthy through January and February are the ones that prepared in September and October.
This is your pre-winter marketing checklist. Every item here is something you can do right now, before the snow hits, to make sure your business stays visible and busy through the coldest months.
Update Your Google Business Profile for Winter
Your Google Business Profile is where most of your local customers find you first. If it still shows your summer hours or an outdoor patio photo from July, it sends the wrong signal.
Hours and Holiday Closures
Go to your Google Business Profile and update your hours for the fall/winter season. If your hours change even slightly between October and March, set that now. More importantly, add your holiday hours for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. Google lets you set special hours for specific dates.
Customers who drive across Edmonton in minus-thirty weather only to find a locked door don’t come back.
Winter Photos
Swap out at least a few of your Business Profile photos. Show your storefront in winter so people know what to look for when everything is covered in snow. If you have heated parking, a cleared walkway, or a warm waiting area, show that. It removes friction from the decision to visit.
Posts and Updates
Google Business Profile posts expire after seven days. Set a reminder to post weekly through the winter. A simple update about a seasonal special, extended hours during a holiday sale, or a behind-the-scenes photo keeps your profile active and signals to Google that your business is alive.
Plan Your Social Media Content Before It Gets Cold
The worst time to think about what to post is when you’re already deep in the winter grind. Plan your November through February social media content now while you still have energy and daylight for photos.
Build a Simple Content Calendar
You don’t need expensive software. A Google Sheet with four columns works: Date, Platform, Topic, and Status. Aim for three posts per week on your main platform (usually Facebook or Instagram for Edmonton businesses).
Fill in the obvious dates first: Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Christmas promotions, New Year’s. Then fill the gaps with evergreen content: customer stories, staff introductions, tips related to your industry, before-and-after shots.
Batch Your Photos Now
Take your product photos, team photos, and location shots now while the lighting is still decent. Once December hits, you’re working with four hours of usable daylight and perpetual grey skies. A batch of 20-30 good photos taken in September or October can carry your social media through the entire winter.
Seasonal Content Ideas That Work in Edmonton
- Behind-the-scenes of your team getting ready for the holiday season
- “How to [your service] in winter” educational posts
- Customer spotlights and testimonials
- Local partnerships and community events
- Snow day specials when Environment Canada issues warnings
Make Your Signage Winter-Ready
If you use outdoor signage, winter changes the game. Snow piles up, visibility drops, and daylight disappears by 4:30 PM.
Check Visibility and Lighting
Walk or drive past your sign at 5:00 PM in late October. Can you read it? If your sign isn’t lit or reflective, it’s invisible for half the day from November through February. Many Edmonton businesses lose months of signage value simply because their sign can’t be seen after dark.
If you’re using a portable billboard sign, talk to your provider about reflective vinyl or a well-lit placement. At OnePoint Solutions, our sign placements account for seasonal visibility, and we use materials that stay readable in snow and low light.
Snow Clearance
A sign buried under a snowbank is a sign that doesn’t exist. If your sign is at ground level or near a parking lot edge, it will get plowed under. Have a plan for clearing it after every major snowfall. If your sign provider handles maintenance (ours does), confirm that snow clearance is included.
Seasonal Messaging
Winter is a good time to swap your sign copy. If you’ve been running the same message since spring, your regular drive-by traffic has tuned it out. A fresh winter message, a holiday special, or a simple “Now Open for Winter Hours” catches attention again.
Update Your Website for the Season
Your website should reflect what’s happening in your business right now, not what was happening six months ago.
Seasonal Services and Promotions
If you offer anything specific to fall or winter, make it easy to find. A furnace company should have a “Book Your Fall Tune-Up” button front and centre. A restaurant should have their holiday catering menu uploaded. A retail store should have their gift guide live.
Don’t bury seasonal content three clicks deep. Put it on your homepage or in your main navigation.
Check Your Load Speed
Edmonton customers searching on their phones in a parking lot at minus-twenty will not wait five seconds for your page to load. Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile score is below 80, you have work to do before the busy holiday search season.
If your site is outdated or slow, September is the right time to rebuild it, not December when you’re already losing traffic.
Local Landing Pages
If you serve multiple areas around Edmonton, make sure you have content targeting each one. A page mentioning Sherwood Park, St. Albert, or Spruce Grove specifically can pick up local searches that a generic Edmonton page misses.
Set Up Holiday Promotions Early
The businesses that win the holiday season aren’t the ones running a last-minute sale on December 20. They’re the ones who planned their promotions in October and started building anticipation in November.
Plan Your Offers
Decide now what you’ll offer for Black Friday, Christmas, and New Year’s. It doesn’t have to be a discount. A free add-on, a gift-with-purchase, or a loyalty reward for existing customers all work without cutting into your margins.
Email Your List
If you have a customer email list (and if you don’t, start collecting now), plan a simple email sequence: one in November to announce what’s coming, one during your holiday promotion, and one in January for a “New Year” offer to re-engage.
Gift Cards and Certificates
If you don’t offer gift cards yet, set them up before November. Gift cards are pure upfront revenue, and they bring new customers into your business in January when traffic is otherwise dead.
The Winter Marketing Checklist
Here’s everything in one list. Print it, tape it to your monitor, and check things off through October:
- Update Google Business Profile hours and holiday hours
- Add winter photos to your Business Profile
- Set up weekly GBP posts
- Build a November-February social media calendar
- Batch-photograph products, team, and location
- Check outdoor signage visibility after dark
- Confirm snow clearance plan for signage
- Update sign copy with a fresh winter message
- Add seasonal services/promotions to your website homepage
- Test your website speed on mobile
- Plan Black Friday and holiday promotions
- Set up gift cards or certificates
- Draft your November and December email campaigns
Start Now, Not in November
Every year, the same pattern plays out. Edmonton businesses coast through September and October, then scramble in November when traffic drops and they realize they haven’t prepared. By then, the competition that planned ahead has already locked in their holiday customers.
You don’t need a big budget to prepare. You need a few hours this month to update your profiles, plan your content, and make sure your business is visible when the snow starts falling.
If you need help with any of this, whether it’s a winter-ready sign, a website refresh, or a social media plan, reach out to OnePoint Solutions. We work with Edmonton small businesses every day, and we know what the winter months demand.
