You’re paying an SEO agency $300, $500, maybe $1,000 a month — and you’re not entirely sure what they’re doing with that money. You’re not alone. SEO is one of those services where the work happens behind the scenes, the results take months, and the reports are full of acronyms nobody explains.
Here’s what a good SEO agency actually does, in plain English.
The Core Work: What Happens Every Month
1. Technical SEO — Making Your Site Work for Google
Before Google ranks your pages, it has to be able to crawl, understand, and index them. An SEO agency handles:
- Site speed optimization. Compressing images, cleaning up code, making sure your site loads fast on mobile. Google penalizes slow sites.
- Fixing crawl errors. Broken links, missing pages, redirect chains — things that confuse Google’s bots and hurt your rankings.
- Schema markup. Structured data that helps Google display your business info, reviews, and services directly in search results. This is increasingly important for AI-powered search too.
- Mobile optimization. Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If it doesn’t work well on a phone, it won’t rank well on anything.
2. On-Page SEO — Making Each Page Rank
This is the page-by-page optimization work:
- Keyword research. Finding out what your customers are actually searching for — the exact phrases, not what you assume they type.
- Title tags and meta descriptions. Writing the text that appears in Google search results. This directly affects whether people click on your listing.
- Header structure. Organizing your content so Google understands what each page is about and which topics it covers.
- Internal linking. Connecting your pages together so Google can discover all of them and understand how they relate.
- Content optimization. Making sure your pages thoroughly answer the questions people are searching for, without keyword stuffing.
3. Local SEO — Getting You Found in Your Area
For businesses that serve a local area, this is often the highest-impact work:
- Google Business Profile management. Keeping your profile complete, posting updates, responding to reviews, adding photos. Your GBP listing is often the first thing customers see.
- NAP citations. Making sure your business name, address, and phone number are consistent across every directory — Google, Yelp, Yellow Pages, industry-specific directories.
- Google Maps optimization. Getting your business into the local “map pack” that appears at the top of local searches.
- Review management. Helping you get more Google reviews and responding to them in a way that builds trust.
4. Content Creation — Giving Google Something to Rank
Google ranks pages, not websites. More quality pages means more opportunities to show up in search results:
- Blog posts that answer questions your customers are searching. Posts like this one — they target specific queries and bring in traffic over time.
- Service pages that are thorough enough to rank for competitive terms.
- FAQ content that captures voice search and AI-generated answer traffic.
- Location pages for businesses serving multiple areas.
5. Link Building — Earning Credibility
Links from other websites to yours are one of Google’s strongest ranking signals. An SEO agency works on:
- Local backlinks from chambers of commerce, local news outlets, business associations, and industry directories.
- Content-driven links where other sites link to your blog posts because they’re genuinely useful.
- Removing toxic links from spammy directories that could hurt your rankings.
6. Reporting — Proving It’s Working
A good agency sends you a monthly report that shows, at minimum:
- Keyword rankings — which terms you’re moving up (or down) for
- Organic traffic — how many people are finding you through Google
- Conversions — calls, form submissions, and direction requests that came from search
- What was done — a summary of the actual work completed that month
If your agency can’t tell you these four things, they’re not doing their job.
What a Good Agency Doesn’t Do
Watch out for agencies that:
- Promise guaranteed #1 rankings. No one can guarantee this. Google’s algorithm considers hundreds of factors and changes constantly.
- Won’t explain their work. If they say “it’s proprietary” or “you wouldn’t understand,” they’re hiding the fact that they’re not doing much.
- Lock you into long contracts. If the work is good, you’ll stay. A 12-month lock-in is there to protect them, not you.
- Buy links in bulk. Cheap link-building schemes from overseas farms can get your site penalized by Google. Recovery takes months.
- Only focus on vanity metrics. Rankings and traffic are means, not ends. What matters is whether more customers are calling.
How to Know If Your SEO Agency Is Working
After 3–6 months, you should see:
- More organic traffic in Google Analytics
- Higher rankings for your target keywords
- More calls or form submissions from organic search
- Your Google Business Profile showing up in more local searches
If none of that is happening after six months of consistent work, it’s time for a conversation — or a new agency.
