Most small businesses in Canada pay somewhere between $499 and $5,000 for a professional website. Where you land depends on the type of site, who builds it and what is included. The prices below are what we see in Edmonton, and they are close to what you will be quoted anywhere else in the country.
Most agencies would rather not say a number until they have you on a call. Here is the honest breakdown.
The real price ranges
DIY builders ($0 to $50 a month). Wix, Squarespace and WordPress.com let you build a site yourself. The monthly fee is low, but the real cost is your time: learning the tool, designing the pages and keeping them up to date. DIY sites also tend to be slower and harder to rank on Google. For a business that needs customers from its website, DIY often costs more in lost leads than it saves in fees.
Freelancers ($500 to $3,000). A local freelancer or an overseas hire can build a basic site for this. Quality varies a lot. You might get a beautiful design that does poorly on Google, or a site that works but looks dated. Ask about page speed, how it looks on a phone, and whether meta tags and structured data are set up.
Small agencies ($1,500 to $8,000). A focused agency follows a set process (discovery, design, build, launch) with SEO planned in from the start. This range gets you a fast, professional site that is ready to rank. Most small businesses land here.
Large agencies ($8,000 to $50,000 and up). Fully custom builds, complex integrations and ongoing retainers. Unless you run a large online store or a multi location franchise, you probably do not need this.
Typical Edmonton agency quotes look like this:
- Template sites (1 to 3 pages): $500 to $2,000
- Custom small business sites (5 to 7 pages): $3,000 to $8,000
- Full custom with branding (8 or more pages): $8,000 to $20,000 and up
On top of the build, many agencies sell SEO as a separate retainer of $1,200 to $3,000 a month. Some charge monthly licensing or platform fees after launch.
What a small business website actually needs to do
Before you compare quotes, know what you are shopping for. A website for a local business has three jobs:
- Show up in search. When someone searches “electrician Edmonton” or “dentist near me”, your site needs to appear. That means SEO built into the code, not added later.
- Look credible on a phone. Most local searches happen on mobile. If your site is slow or messy on a phone, people leave.
- Make it easy to contact you. Phone number, email, a form and your location, all easy to find.
Animations, custom illustrations and video backgrounds are nice extras. A fast, clean site that ranks will beat a flashy one that does not.
What should be included at any price
No matter who you hire, a professional website in 2026 should come with:
- Mobile optimization. Most web traffic is on phones. If your site does not work well there, you lose those visitors right away.
- Page speed. Google ranks faster sites higher and people abandon slow ones. Ask your developer what Lighthouse score to expect.
- On-page SEO. A unique title and meta description on every page, a clear heading structure and alt text on images. This is the basics, not an upsell.
- A working contact form. It sounds obvious and it is often broken. Test it before you sign off on launch.
- Analytics. You need to know where visitors come from and what they do. Setup should be part of any professional build.
What pushes the price up
- Online stores. Product management, checkout, payments and inventory add real work.
- Custom design. A fully custom look takes more hours than adapting a proven layout.
- Copywriting. Most quotes assume you supply the words. If the developer writes everything, expect to pay for it.
- Integrations. Booking systems, CRMs, email platforms and other tools add development time.
Hidden costs to watch for
- Monthly platform fees. Some builders and agencies charge $30 to $200 a month just to keep your site online, on top of the build.
- SEO as a separate retainer. If SEO is not part of the build, you may be quoted $1,200 to $3,000 a month extra. Ask exactly what “SEO is extra” means.
- Revision limits. Some agencies allow one round of changes, then bill by the hour.
- Content. If you do not have your text ready, some agencies charge more or launch with placeholder copy.
- Ownership. Ask directly: “Do I own the site when we are done?” The answer should be yes. If the site lives on the agency’s own platform, you lose it when you leave.
What we charge
We publish our prices because you should know what a website costs before you pick up the phone. There are three tiers:
Launch, from $499. 1 to 3 pages, mobile friendly, SEO and AEO included, structured data and hosting setup help. Right for a new business that needs to be online before the first customer walks in.
Grow, from $1,499. 5 to 7 pages, content support, local SEO setup, light brand polish and two rounds of revisions. Right for most established businesses: restaurants, clinics, trades, retail and salons. This is where most clients start.
Bespoke, $5,000 to $10,000. 8 or more pages, fully custom design, brand guidelines, advanced integrations, AEO content blocks and three months of SEO after launch.
Every tier includes the SEO foundations (meta tags, clean code, fast load times, structured data, internal links), AEO so AI assistants like ChatGPT can understand and cite you, and full ownership of the code, content and domain when the site launches. How long does it take?
- Launch and Grow: 2 to 3 weeks from kickoff, once we have your content and brand details.
- Bespoke: 4 to 8 weeks, depending on scope, integrations and brand work.
The biggest delay is almost always content. If you have your logo, photos and a rough idea of what you want to say, we move fast.
Can we meet in person?
If you are in the Edmonton area, yes. We are at 15020 116 Ave NW and kickoff is often in person: your office, a coffee shop or our studio. For Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Leduc and Fort Saskatchewan we drive out for larger builds. Clients in the rest of Canada work with us by video call and email at the same prices.
The bottom line
A good small business website in Canada costs between $499 and $10,000 depending on scope, and most land between $499 and $3,000. You do not need to spend $15,000 to get a site that ranks, looks professional and turns visitors into customers. You need clean code, proper SEO, fast load times and a design people trust.
